Chasing a Sea of Clouds
Chasing a sea of clouds means timing a pre-dawn summit so valley fog forms below while peaks bask in first light. As the sun rises, clouds churn and spill like slow-motion surf, revealing ridges, grasslands, and pine forests.
It feels alpine at tropical latitudes—crisp air, soft gold horizons, and a hush broken only by footsteps and camera shutters. Even modest hikes can deliver transcendent views with the right conditions.
Another early start worth it near Manila is the Mt Pinatubo hike, a 4x4 ride and canyon walk to a blue-green crater lake.

Best Time forSea of Clouds Hike
Clear, cool months from November to March offer the highest chance of cloud inversions and starry pre-dawn skies. A cold night followed by a dry morning is the classic recipe—arrive early enough to settle at the summit before first light.
Rainy season hikes can still be beautiful but bring mud, leeches, and lower odds of those textbook layers. Always check local advisories for trail closures, and avoid typhoon windows for safety.
Preparation Tips
Secure permits (e.g., DENR for Pulag), book accredited guides, and respect caps on daily hikers. Pack layers: base layer, fleece, windproof shell, beanie, and gloves—Pulag can dip near freezing at dawn.
Use headlamps with fresh batteries, trekking poles, and trail shoes with grip. Bring hot drinks, snacks, a small sit pad, and a trash bag—practice strict Leave No Trace and stay on marked trails.
