Boracay Travel Guide: Beaches, Best Time and Tips

Boracay Travel Guide

This Boracay travel guide covers the small island in Malay, Aklan, that made Philippine beach holidays famous: a 4-kilometer strip of powdery White Beach, sailboats at sunset and clear, shallow water that stays swimmable for most of the year. Boracay is busy and developed, but it is also easy, safe and genuinely beautiful, which is why it keeps topping travelers’ lists.

The island you visit today was shaped by a six-month government closure for environmental rehabilitation that ended on October 26, 2018 (GMA News). Stricter rules on sewage, beachfront structures, smoking and drinking followed, and they still shape how you enjoy the beach. Below you will find the best beaches, things to do in Boracay, how to get there, when to go and how to travel lightly.

Top Attractions

White Beach and Willy’s Rock

The famous 4-kilometer beach, split into Stations 1 to 3. Station 1 is known for its wide stretch of fine sand and the rock formation called Willy’s Rock; Station 2 is the busy center around D’Mall.

Puka Shell Beach

An 800-meter beach on the north coast with coarser sand, stronger waves and a quieter, local feel. Come for the sunset and the slower pace.

Bulabog Beach

The windy east-coast beach that becomes Boracay’s kitesurfing and windsurfing hub when the northeast monsoon blows, roughly November to April.

Cultural Experiences

Boracay’s first inhabitants are the Ati, an Indigenous people who still have a community on the island. Treat their village as a neighborhood, not an attraction, and buy crafts or services directly when they are offered.

On the mainland, Kalibo, the provincial capital and home to one of the two gateway airports, hosts the Ati-Atihan Festival every January, with drums, face paint and street dancing that honor the province’s Ati heritage. If you fly in through Kalibo in January, plan a night there.

The island’s own tradition is the paraw, a double-outrigger sailboat that glides off White Beach every afternoon. Our Paraw Sunset Sailing guide explains how to join a ride responsibly.

Adventure Activities

Most adventures start from the beach. Island-hopping boats circle to Crystal Cove, Crocodile Island and snorkeling spots off the south coast, while cliff-jumping trips head to Ariel’s Point, a 35 to 45-minute boat ride away near Buruanga (Boracay iPass).

Kitesurfing and windsurfing: Bulabog Beach is one of the country’s best-known kite spots in the northeast-monsoon months. See our Kitesurfing in the Philippines guide.
Sailing: a sunset paraw ride from White Beach is the classic Boracay outing.
Hiking: climb Mount Luho, the island’s highest viewpoint at about 100 meters, for views of the east coast.
On and under the water: snorkeling, paddleboarding, kayaking and helmet diving are offered by accredited operators along White Beach.

Culinary Delights

Eat seafood the island way at D’Talipapa, the wet market near Station 2: choose fresh fish, prawns or crabs from the stalls, then have a nearby restaurant cook them for you, a style Filipinos call paluto. Agree on the cooking price before you order.

Look for Aklanon dishes such as inubarang manok, chicken stewed with banana pith, and sweet mango shakes at beach kiosks. White Beach also has everything from simple carinderias to beachfront grills, but dining on the sand of White Beach itself is not allowed, so enjoy your meal at the restaurant tables behind the beach.

How to Get There

There are two gateway airports. Caticlan (Godofredo P. Ramos Airport) is only 5 to 10 minutes from the Caticlan Jetty Port, while Kalibo International Airport is about 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes away by road, according to the provincial Boracay iPass site. Kalibo is the larger, international airport; Caticlan saves time on the transfer to the island.

Before you travel, register on Boracay iPass, the official Provincial Government of Aklan platform. It lets you pay the port terminal fee, the Malay environmental fee and the boat fare online and gives you a QR code to show at the Caticlan port. Children aged 5 and below are exempt from the terminal pass if proof of age is uploaded. The form asks for your hotel, so book a Department of Tourism-accredited stay first.

Boat crossing: public ferries take about 10 to 15 minutes from Caticlan to Cagban Port on Boracay, speedboats about 3 to 5 minutes.
On the island: e-trikes, hop-on hop-off buses or hotel shuttles take you from Cagban to your hotel in roughly 5 to 10 minutes.
Bad weather: if a typhoon forces a port change, iPass notes that the terminal fee may be adjusted, so check updates before you set out.

Best Time and What to Expect

The best time to visit Boracay for calm water and sunshine is the dry, northeast-monsoon season from about November to May, when White Beach is sheltered and the sunsets are reliable. December and January are the busiest weeks, and Holy Week brings big crowds too, so book early for those dates.

If you want the clearest water, note that green algae, locally called lumot, is most noticeable on White Beach from February to May, when sea temperatures rise (Esquire Philippines). It is harmless, and Puka and Diniwid beaches are usually less affected. From June to October the southwest monsoon can bring rain, waves on White Beach and, at times, typhoons, so keep your plans flexible.

What to expect on the island

Drinking alcohol and smoking are banned on the beach and in public places; you can drink at beachfront hotels, bars and restaurants that stay behind the vegetation line (Inquirer).
Large beach parties need a special permit and noise is regulated, rules that the tourism department has stressed since the rehabilitation (Inquirer).
Boracay is far from the areas covered by foreign travel warnings for the Philippines; the U.S. advisory, for example, keeps the country at Level 2 and limits its stronger warnings to parts of Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago (U.S. State Department). Normal precautions against pickpocketing and scams still apply.

Responsible Travel Tips

Stay at a DOT-accredited hotel; accreditation is tied to sewage and environmental compliance.
Bring a refillable water bottle and a reusable bag. Single-use plastics are restricted on the island.
Use reef-safe sunscreen and never stand on or touch coral when snorkeling.
Leave the sand, shells and pebbles on the beach. Taking them is prohibited.
Choose licensed operators for boats, kiteboarding and island hopping, and wear the life jacket.
Keep the beach clean and respect the no-smoking, no-drinking zones.
